Early History
Law enforcement agencies were not early adopters of the automobile. The clunky and unreliable contraptions of the early 20th Century were of no use to officers who needed to be quick and mobile. It wasn’t until the 1920s and 30s that the vehicles became a standard component of most law enforcement agencies. Officers used the vehicles to cover larger areas and to chase down moonshiners and other criminals who were making increasing use of the automobile themselves.
Birth of the Police Cruiser
Early in the history of the automobile, there were no models devoted specifically to police departments. It wasn’t until the 1950s that carmakers began introducing vehicle packages specifically geared to law enforcement. Some of the most popular, iconic models of the 1960s include the Chrysler Enforcer, the Chevrolet Biscayne, and the Mercury Monterey. It was around this time that beacons began appearing on most police cars, providing an alert system in conjunction with automatic sirens.
Modern-Day Police Vehicles
In the early 1990s, Ford released its Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, which quickly became the vehicle of choice for law enforcement agencies across the United States. The model is used by police across the country to this day, but is increasingly giving way to a range of different vehicles. Departments have invested in everything from SUVs to powerful models like the Dodge Charger to better cope in a range of settings. Lights and sirens have become similarly flexible. Small but powerful dashboard and visor lights, for instance, give undercover officers discreet but effective emergency light systems.
